Byari to be screened at IFF 2012

Mangalore, Oct 19, 2012: Byari, the first movie directed by K. P. Surveeran, and Kurmavatara, Girish Kasaravalli’s latest movie, are the two movies from Karnataka among the list of 20 Indian movies, which will be screened at the Indian Panorama, which forms part of the 43rd International Film Festival (IFF) 2012, scheduled to be held in Goa from Nov 20 to Nov 30.

Kurmavatara, a movie based on a Kannada novelette of the same name written by renowned Kannada writer Kum Veerabhadrappa, bagged the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Kannada in 2011. It is about Anand Rao, a government employee who strongly resembles Mahatma Gandhi.

Byari, which bagged the 59th National Award for Best Film along with Deool, Umesh
Kulkarni’s Marathi movie, is about the conditioning of women in the Byari community. The movie mirrors the culture, language, and traditions of Byari community and highlights the strict marriage laws and their effects on women.

These feature films were selected by a selection committee comprising 10 members such as Buddhadeb Dasgupta, Katte Ramachandra, Suresh Krissna, and Sibi Malayil.

Three Bengali movies, five Malayalam movies, three Marathi movies, an Assamese movie, a Konkani movie, a Bhojpuri movie, a Byari movie, an English movie, a Punjabi movie, and a Tamil movie will be screened as part of Indian Panorama.

Life of Pi, a 3D film directed by the Oscar award-winning director Ang Lee, will be screened to mark the beginning of this 11-day festival and the last film screened will be Mira Nair’s The Reluctant Fundamentalist.

The festival will also celebrate the fact that Indian cinema will complete 100 years.
