ivan dsouzaMangalore, Jan 22: Congress leader Ivan D’Souza declared at a press meet held at the Congress office on Jan 22, Saturday that the BJP has no right to stage bundh. It is a government-sponsored bundh. The BJP has called for a bundh only to divert the attention of the public from the chief minister’s corrupt activities, he added.

Stating that the governor’s order to prosecute the chief minister is right, he said that the governor had sanctioned proceedings against the CM only after carefully examining the case and in  accordance with Section 187 of CRPC.

Regarding the BJP’s corrupt activities, he said that the party has been guilty of corruption right from the beginning, adding that the CM ought to have resigned as soon as he was found guilty. Since he did not do so, the Congress leaders again demand his resignation, he stated.

Informing the press that police officials are also involved in today’s bundh, he said that police officers have forced shop owners to pull down the shutters in places such as Urwa Market, Pumpwell, Jyothi Circle, and PVS. Mr. D’Souza said that he will personally inform Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh and urge him to take stern action against the police officers involved. He also said that there are eyewitnesses to these incidents and that he was turned back near Jyothi Circle.

Criticizing Anwar Manippady, the chairman of the state minority commission, for visiting the city and urging people to support the bundh, he said that holiday was declared for schools and colleges the previous night and demanded to know how the government had declared holiday.

Making a forceful statement that the law and order have collapsed in the state, he said that the state government has wrecked the national reputation of the state. Responding to the BJP’s public statement that the governor is all set to destroy the government, he said that the BJP should call itself the “Brastachara Janatha Party.” The sudden bundh has terrified the people, he added.

Ivan D’Souza concluded his press statement by urging the chief minister to not only resign, but also face the prosecution.

Congress leaders Shashidhar Hegde, M. G. Hegde, Ashok D. K., Sadashiva Ullal, T. K. Sudhir, Praveenchandra, and others were also present.
