Building owner, organiser booked after parapet wall collapse kills student in Mangaluru

Mangaluru, Sep 27, 2026: Mangaluru South police have booked building owner Parikshit Rai and programme organiser and advocate Dinakar Shetty for alleged negligence following the collapse of a portion of a parapet wall at Rama Lakshmi Narayan Convention Hall in Yemmekere on Saturday afternoon.

The incident occurred when a large number of students had gathered outside the convention hall for the oath-taking ceremony of the newly elected office-bearers of the All College Students Association, organised by Shetty.

According to police, some students had climbed to the first floor of the hall to watch the rally of the newly elected office-bearers as it approached the venue. As the rally neared the hall, a few students leaning against the parapet wall fell when a portion of the wall collapsed.

Second-year PU student Moideen Shammas was killed in the incident, while four others who were standing below sustained injuries.

Police have registered a case against the building owner and organiser for alleged negligence, and further investigation is under way.
