Brahmavar: Woman kills infant daughter, dies by suicide

Brahmavar, Sep 2, 2025: A woman and her one-and-a-half-year-old daughter were found hanging at their residence near Kunjalu Heranje Cross under Brahmavar police station limits on August 31.

The deceased have been identified as Sushmita (35) and her daughter Shrestha (1 year, 6 months). The incident occurred when Sushmita’s husband had reportedly gone to Bengaluru on court-related work.

Udupi superintendent of police Hariram Shankar, who visited the spot, said preliminary investigation suggests that the mother killed her child before ending her own life. A suicide note has been recovered, in which she claimed full responsibility for the act.

Police sources said Sushmita’s husband had earlier been convicted by the High Court in connection with a 2009 attempt-to-murder case (Section 307 IPC).

A case has been registered, and further investigation is underway.
