The survey aims to draw attention to the importance of cancer prevention and early detection among the public and the government. The programme was organised by Sanjeevini Cancer Seva Trust in association with MIO.

Legislative Council member Ivan D’Souza, who was the chief guest, released the report and expressed concern over the rapid rise in cancer cases. He said the disease can be cured if detected at an early stage. He also noted that a request has been submitted to the Chief Minister to establish satellite cancer treatment centres in Dakshina Kannada, on the lines of Mysuru and Kalaburagi.

Dr Suresh Rao, Director of MIO and President of Sanjeevini Cancer Seva Trust, said that despite a reasonable level of awareness, less than 15 per cent of people undergo regular cancer screening. He added that India has an estimated 14 lakh cancer patients, with a higher prevalence among women. The survey has been completed in Dakshina Kannada and is currently underway in Udupi and Shivamogga.

Daijiworld Media Founder and Managing Director Walter Nandalike thanked all those involved in the survey. Highlighting the need for a change in perception, he said cancer patients need empathy rather than sympathy, and appreciated the efforts of the team led by Dr Suresh Rao.

Doctors from MIO, including Dr Venkataramana Kini, Dr Rohan Gatti and Dr Jalaluddin Akbar, were present. The event was attended by doctors, healthcare professionals, community leaders and survey participants.
