
Mangalore, Sep 15, 2013: The foundation laying ceremony of the Shrine of the Blessed John Paul II was laid at Pope Grounds, Bajpe on September 14, Saturday. Mangalore Bishop Rev. Fr Aloysius Paul D’Souza laid the foundation.
The Shrine to be constructed by the Mangalore Diocese and Bajpe Parish to commemorate the visit of the Pope on February 6,1986, will come up next to the podium from which the Pope had addressed nearly five lakh people.The ground from where the Pope addressed the crowd has been named Pope Ground and a layout has also come up in the area.
The Bishop who spoke on the occasion, said the shrine when completed will fulfill a longstanding desire of the faithful who can feel the presence of Pope John Paul II amidst them. He also recalled the visit of the Pope to Mangalore in 1986.
Msgr Denis Moras Prabhu, Vicar General of Mangalore Diocese, Fr Onil D’Souza, Fr William Menezes, Fr Remezius Aranha, Vicar of the Pezar Deanery, Fr Leo Lobo, Parish Priest,Fr Praveen D’Souza, Assistant Parish Priest, Roshan Pereira, ICYM president Roshan Periera and others were present.
