Birth Defect of Aorta Corrected Without Surgery at Unity Health Complex

Mangalore, Nov 6, 2012: Birth Defect of Aorta Causing high pressure was corrected without surgery  for an 18 year old girl recently at Unity health complex, said Dr Paul Varghese at a press conference held in Mangalore on Monday, November 5, 2012.

 

 

 

Explaining details of the procedure, Dr. Paul Varghese, Interventional Cardiologist said that an 18 year old girl with uncontrolled blood pressure and pain in both legs with even mild effort, due to severe coarctation of the aorta has undergone treatment at Unity Health Complex on October 14.  A tight band like constriction of the major artery arising from the heart was cured following a three hour long intricate procedure without surgery.  

The procedure was carried out by the cardiac team headed by Dr Paul Vargheese and the anaesthetic team led by Dr Chethana Anand. The blood pressure returned to normal and she was discharged without any medication on the third day. The procedure was completed percutaneously without leaving any outward scars, an important consideration in this girl of marriageable age.

 

 

The procedure costing 1.2 lakh was done at a heavily subsidised rate as part of a camp for patients with birth defects of the heart conducted by Unity Hospital. Both children and adults with septal defects and patent ductus arteriosus (holes in the heart) were successfully treated with percutaneous procedures during the camp.

Answering questions, Dr. Paul Vargese said that the procedure in very intricate and has to be done with precise expertise. He explained the procedure with images of the recent case of the young girl. There are only few health centres doing this procedure in the country and Unity is among them with the infrastructure and equipments to do it. Unity Management is extending this facility at a very concessional cost to a few poor children.

 

 

 

Dr Kishore Shetty, Neurosurgeon and Spine Surgeon, talked about Ozone Disc Therapy for pain in spinal cord. Explaining the treatment, he said that the Oxygen-ozone therapy is a simple procedure that exploits the biochemical properties of a gas mixture of oxygen and ozone in lumbar disk area. It could help to relieve pain and have normal life within hours of treatment. The cost of the Ozone Therapy is less than Rs 10,000 only.
