Belthangady: businessman duped of Rs 87 lakh by woman he met on matrimonial site

Belthangady, Jul 21, 2026: A case has been registered at the Belthangady Police Station after a businessman alleged that a woman he met through a matrimonial website cheated him of over Rs 87 lakh by promising to marry him.

According to the complaint, the businessman, a resident of Belthangady, came into contact with Anisha Palanna (35), said to be from Shivamogga/Bengaluru, through a matrimonial website in May 2024. The two later stayed in touch through Instagram and mobile phone conversations, during which they discussed marriage.

The complainant alleged that Anisha repeatedly claimed she was facing financial difficulties in her business and persuaded him to transfer money in instalments to various bank accounts, as well as to her own account and via Google Pay. He further alleged that she also collected several lakhs of rupees in cash through a person who met him in Bengaluru on her behalf.

After allegedly receiving a total of Rs 87,22,710 in multiple transactions, Anisha reportedly became unreachable and failed to return the money, the complaint stated.

Based on the complaint, the Belthangady Police registered a case on July 18 under Section 318(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, and have launched an investigation.
