Bantwal, Apr 27, 2026: In a heartwarming incident, a pregnant woman gave birth to a baby boy inside a train coach at B C Road railway station on Sunday night.
The woman, identified as Ponnamma, a resident of Savanoor in Mysuru, was travelling on the Mangaluru-Bengaluru train. Shortly after the train departed from Mangaluru, she began experiencing labour pains. Noticing her distress, a group of Muslim women travelling to Bengaluru immediately came to her aid and alerted railway officials.
Acting swiftly, the railway department halted the train at B C Road station and coordinated with a medical team from the local Somayaji Hospital, which rushed to the station to assist with the delivery inside the train coach. The team successfully conducted the delivery, and Ponnamma gave birth to a healthy baby boy.
Following the birth, both mother and child were initially shifted to Somayaji Hospital by ambulance. After a preliminary examination, doctors advised further observation and referred them to Wenlock Hospital in Mangaluru for specialised care. Medical sources said both the mother and newborn are healthy.
The train, which arrived at B C Road at 7:20 pm, remained at the station for nearly an hour to ensure the safety of the mother and child before resuming its journey at 8:20 pm.
The timely intervention of the medical team played a key role in the successful delivery. Lokesh, a driver of the Sujnana ambulance in Kalladka, reached Somayaji Hospital and transported the doctors to the railway station within three minutes of receiving the emergency call. After the delivery, the baby was taken to the hospital in the Sujnana ambulance, while the mother followed in the Somayaji Hospital ambulance.
Local residents, including Samad from Kaikamba, personnel from the Bantwal City Police Station, and members of the public, also helped in making the necessary arrangements. A team from the Mangaluru Railway Police later arrived at the scene to gather further details.
It is reported that Ponnamma is employed at a private hospital in Mangaluru, though official confirmation is awaited.
