Bantwal, May 15, 2025: A tragic road accident near Sajipa on Thursday claimed the life of a lorry driver after a load of hot bitumen mixed with gravel spilled onto him. The incident occurred in Sajipanadu, Bantwal taluk.
The deceased has been identified as 45-year-old Rafiq, a resident of Golipadpu, Sajipanadu. Yusuf, the cleaner who was in the same lorry, sustained severe burns to his hands and legs. Two others — Rizwan, the driver of the second lorry, and a person identified as Alpas — were also injured and are receiving treatment at a local hospital.
The accident took place at Kanchinadkapadavu when a lorry transporting red stones was headed toward Sajipanadu. A tipper lorry carrying hot bitumen, which was trailing behind, reportedly collided with the vehicle in front.
The collision was so forceful that both lorries overturned and tumbled into a nearby areca plantation located at a lower elevation beside the road.
As a result of the crash, the hot bitumen and gravel from the tipper spilled directly onto Rafiq, causing severe burns. He was rushed to a private hospital in Mangaluru but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries despite medical efforts.
Yusuf also sustained serious burns from the spillage and is currently under medical care.
Melkar traffic sub-inspector Suthesh visited the scene and has registered a case in connection with the incident.
