BWF organizes mass marriage ceremony

Mangalore, January 13: Lamenting that non Islamic influences and ignorance has made marriage an intolerable burden for most middle-class Muslims despite the fact that Islam has the simplest and best form of marriage in the world, Thwaqa Ahmed Musliyar, the Qazi of Mangalore, said that the dowry problem is burdening a huge chunk of the Muslim community at present.


He was addressing a number of Muslims gathered at Milagres Hall on Thursday to witness the mass marriage ceremony of 15 Muslim couples organized by the Abu Dhabi based Bearys Welfare Forum (BWF). Applauding groups and organizations for arranging mass marriage programmes, he warned them not to spend money collected to arrange the marriages of poor people for other purposes.

Bekala Ibrahim Musliyar, the Qazi of Udupi, inaugurated the event, and encouraged the youth to get married in a simple manner according to Prophet Mohammed’s sunnah. Speaking about the challenges of marrying off daughters, he said that although peace of mind is available only in married life, non Islamic influences and rituals have made marriage very difficult.

BWF President Mohammed Ali Uchil delivered the welcome address and also delivered the presidential address. BWF Vice President Sheikh Bawa delivered the introductory address, and Joint Treasurer Basheer Bajpe spoke about the BWF’s plans for the future.

C. M. Ibrahim, the former union minister; U. T. Khader, the MLA of Mangalore; and SP Dr. A. S. Rao also addressed the gathering.  B. A. Mohidin, the former state minister, and B. Ahmed Haji Mohiuddin, the chairman of Mohiuddin Educational Foundation, were felicitated on the occasion in recognition of their achievements in the field of education.

Karnataka Beary Sahitya Academy Chairman M. B. Abdul Rahman, DK District Congress Minority Cell Chairman Moideen Bava, Al Badriya Educational Association Chairman B. M. Mumthaz Ali, and Founder Chairman of Talent Research Foundation Abdul Rauf Puthige were also present.

15 Muslim couples tied the knot on that day; and BWF gave each couple 5 sovereigns of gold, wedding attire, and other expenses. Each couple received a total of Rs. 1.25 lakhs. The marriages were solemnized by the Qazi of Mangalore.
