Mangaluru, Oct 16, 2021: The BJP is using the Christian community as a soft target for its political conspiracy in the name of conversion, alleged former MLA J R Lobo.
Speaking to reporters here on October 16, Saturday, he said the directive given to officials to file a report on the activities of Christian missionaries and institutions, at a recent meeting of the House Committee of Backward Classes and Minorities Welfare and the statement that the Committee members should visit churches on Sunday, is a part of this conspiracy, Lobo alleged.
"The directive is beyond the powers of the committee and is aimed at malafide political intentions. There is no scope for forced conversion, even if something like that is happening, then there are laws to deal with it, but resorting to such moves is a divide and rule policy," he said.
"If the beneficiaries of educational, medical and social service activities of the Christian community have been converted, then 70% of the population should have been Christians, but Christians constitute only 12% of the population of the district, 2.5% of the state and just 3.5% of the nation’s population," he said.
District Congress President Harish Kumar, T K Sudhir, Ramananda Poojary, Subodh Alva and other party leaders were present.
