Autos, taxis in Udupi to have mandatory display cards ; software launched

Udupi, Nov 2, 2013 : Western Range IGP Pratap Reddy  launched a software which enables maintain  full information about autorickshaw and taxi drivers of the district, on November 1, Friday.

The software  developed by the Police Department ensures safety of passengers  while travelling in autos and taxis. The project is being implemented on a pilot basis and the department plans to extend the same even to Dakshina Kannada, Uttara Kannada and Chikmagalur districts.

There will be a travel safety register and all autorickshaw and taxi drivers have to enroll in it. The SI will scrutinize the details and issue a display card and a unique identity number.  The display card having full particulars about the driver  will help  the passenger  easily identify the driver.

The display card will be behind the driver’s seat so that the passenger  can note it down easily. All drivers will have to register by the month end.

 The enrolment in the registry will  be mandatory after January. Defaulting driver will  have to pay a penalty of Rs 2000 and there will be regular checking to ensure that rules are followed.

In case passenger realizes that the display card and the driver do not match, a complaint can be made  by sending an SMS to  9480805400 so that  immediate action can be taken, the IGP informed.
