Mangaluru, June 30, 2023: The agency responsible for waste management in the city, Antony Waste Handling Cell Limited (AWHCL), has issued a legal notice to the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) stating its intention to cease the collection and transportation of municipal solid waste, as well as the cleaning of streets and roadside drains, starting from August 1. This decision is based on the expiration of the extended contract term.
AWHCL, through advocate Vivekananda Paniyala, served the notice to the MCC commissioner, highlighting the MCC’s significant and deliberate failure to pay a substantial outstanding bill of Rs. 60.8 crore. This amount represents the reimbursement of the differential minimum wages paid by the MCC to its employees. Additionally, there are pending arrears concerning quarterly escalation and monthly bills.
It should be noted that the original term of the contract expired on January 31, 2022. However, the government of Karnataka and the MCC extended the contract for an additional year, from February 1, 2022, to January 31, 2023. Due to the city corporation’s inability to make alternative arrangements, the contract was further extended by six months until July 31. Considering the upcoming expiration of the extended contract term on July 31, AWHCL states in the notice that it cannot continue providing the service of waste collection and transportation for the North and South zones starting from August 1. They express their unwillingness to consider any further extensions unless all outstanding dues are fully paid and settled.
