
Mangalore, Jan 27, 2014: Two more attempts to smuggle gold through the Mangalore International Airport were foiled by alert customs officials at the Airport on January 26, Sunday, just a day after gold biscuits worth nearly Rs 21 lakh were seized from a Kasargod person.

In the first case reported on Sunday, customs officials arrested Mohammad Azharuddin of Kannur in Kasargod with gold weighing 558.590 grams concealed in three strips, key and nail cutter which were painted in silver. The passenger also had a headpiece of an electric shaver which was gold but painted in silver and also a gold block. The seized items found packed inside a carton, are valued at Rs 16.82 lakh.Azharuddin had arrived by a Jet Airways Flight.
In the second case, a man identified as Abdul Nazir from Chengala in Kasargod who arrived by an Air India Express flight was apprehended with gold worth Rs 7.94 lakhs. The gold weighing 262.980 grams was hidden in three LED lights.
The value of the seized gold in both the cases is Rs 24.81 lakhs.
Customs Commissioner D Purushottam has informed that gold worth Rs 58,09,336 and weighing 1,929.59 grams were seized in four cases during the past one week.
