New Delhi, April 22, 2021: Are you scared that a single mask isn’t enough protection in these critical times? Are you confused whether an extra layer is recommended if you are wearing an N95 mask?
With Covid-19 cases rising rapidly across the country, it is becoming more and more essential to adopt the most effective safety practices to avoid getting infected. According to Dr Kirti Sabnis, infectious disease specialist at Fortis Hospital, Kalyan in Mumbai, double masking can enhance protection and cut down one’s chances of transmitting or catching the virus.
She said, “A recent study at the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that if everyone double-masked, Covid exposure can be reduced by 96.4 per cent.”
What is double-masking?
When a person wears one mask on top of another, it is termed as ‘double-masking’.
The outer mask can apply gentle pressure to the edges of the inner mask and create a better seal. Since the virus is spread through respiratory droplets, two layers can help to increase filtration and provide protection if someone around you sneezes or coughs.
When to double-mask?
Consider wearing a double mask when venturing out into crowded places like airports and bus stands and also while using local public transport.
What is the ideal mask combination?
One cloth mask on top of a surgical mask or two cloth masks are ideal combinations. A cloth mask on top of a three-ply mask is also useful.
A face shield along with a mask can be used in extremely crowded places. However, if you are using an N95 mask, avoid double-masking. Double masks for children are avoidable.
