Dr. Ramarao said true self-reliance can be achieved by developing indigenous defence technologies and equipment. He highlighted his role in the development of key missile systems such as Agni, Prithvi, Nag, BrahMos and Akash.

Stressing the importance of value-based education, he said nurturing humanity and strong character among citizens is essential. He also noted that significant progress has been made in energy production, with a major project expected to be completed and officially announced by the end of the year.

Recalling his association with former President A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, Dr. Ramarao said Kalam had encouraged scientific research for achieving self-reliance. Inspired by this, research on energy production began in 2012 and is now nearing completion.

Vast Opportunities in Science

Speaking on the occasion, B. R. Guruprasad, Director of the Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium, Bengaluru, and former ISRO scientist, said students must understand the achievements of earlier generations and utilise the vast opportunities in the field of science.

He recalled the contributions of eminent scientist Udupi Ramachandra Rao, noting that his achievements continue to inspire future generations. He urged students to cultivate honesty and discipline to succeed in scientific pursuits.

Guruprasad said modern satellites play a crucial role in communication, weather forecasting and defence, and emphasised that today’s students must carry forward these achievements.

Develop Scientific Temper

Vinayak K. Pattar, researcher at the Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR), Bengaluru, called upon students to develop a scientific temper and questioning mindset. He stressed that holistic national development depends on progress in science and called for greater focus on fundamental research.
