
Mangalore, Jun 14, 2013: Roshni Nilaya School of Social Work released a nationwide report on ’Elder Abuse in India’ by Help Age India to mark the World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on June 14, Friday.
Speaking after inaugurating the event, Abhishek Goyal, Superintendent of Police said abuse of elders has been on the rise in India which is known for its respect and care towards the elders.



He also said that Police Department in association with NGOs is ready to extend their support and provide space for counseling center at SP office. He also urged the government to establish more homes for the elderly.
Most of the parents who face abuse from their children do not file a police complaint as they do not want their children to be punished, he said. As this is a sensitive issue, it needs to be solved by creating awareness and through counseling, Goyal further added.
Organizer Rekha Murthy said that as per the survey conducted by Help Age India in 2010, out of 24 cities in 20 states across country, Bangalore is in the 7th place in elder abuse, whereas Mangalore is in the 13th and Madurai in the first place.
Dr Olinda Pereira, Director of Vishwas Trust, Dr Sophia N Fernandes, Principal of Roshni Nilaya School of Social Work, Sr Sylvia Fernandes, Mother Superior, Sisters of Charity, and others were present.
