Mangalore, June 20, 2012 : The Akhila Bharathiya Vidhyarthi Parishad (ABVP) organized a protest in front of St. Aloysius College on June 20, Wednesday to condemn the indifferent attitude of St. Aloysius PU College toward one of its old students. The college had issued a conduct certificate on which it marked the student’s character as “unsatisfactory.”
ABVP State Secretary Ramesh K. said that J. K. Bindu Madhav Tilak, who studied BSBA in St. Aloysius PU College from June 16, 2010 to March 31, 2012 had over 75 percent attendance in all his subjects, but the college has marked his character as unsatisfactory only because he is an active member of the ABVP.
Ever since the Mangalore University granted autonomy to the college, students have been suffering, he alleged, urging the university to revoke the autonomy and take action against the college.
Chinmay Rai, chief secretary of ABVP, said that Tilak was an honest student and ABVP activist who had taken an active part in Anna Hazare’s anti-corruption movement as several other college students in Mangalore did. He paid his fees of time and did not have any attendance short, in spite of which the college has given him a conduct certificate with “unsatisfactory” marked on it.
Further, he said that, when Anna Hazare launched his anti-corruption movement in 2011 – 12, several students of St. Aloysius College took part in the protest with students of other colleges across the city. But the principal of St. Aloysius College had warned students not to take part in the protest. In spite of this, a number of students protested against corruption. The principal, who checked video footages of the protest, identified some of these students and began taking action against them.
He also alleged that the college has gotten into the habit of receiving huge amounts of money from students for courses that have not been approved by the university.
The ABVP demanded that St. Aloysius PU College should issue a proper conduct certificate to Mr. Tilak and that Mangalore University must revoke that status of autonomy granted to the college.
