Ghoti, Maharastra, Nov 15: Seven people have been killed and 50 injured as Train No.12618 Nizmuddin – Ernakulam Mangala express derailed at 06.20 hrs between Goti -Igathpuri stations in Central Railway. Three AC coaches and Eight Non AC Coaches derailed. At least 14 bogies of the train have been derailed.
The incident took place at 6:25 am on Friday about 100 kms from Nashik when the train was travelling from Ernakulam in Kerala to Nizamuddin, Delhi.
The injured have been rushed to Ghoti, Kasara and Nashik civil hospitals, while rescue operations were in progress, police added.
The reason of the derailment is yet to be ascertained.
Following the mishap, rail-traffic on the up side was affected, forcing railway authorities to cancel various trains, including Manmad-Kurla-Godavari Express and Manmad-Mumbai Panchavati Express. Also, Sevagram Express and Rajya Rani Express were halted at Lasalgaon.
Roshni Nilaya students escaped unhurt in the derailed train
Thirteen students from the School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya, who were returning home in train No. 12618- Nizamuddin-Ernakulam Mangala Express that derailed in Maharashtra on Friday morning, are reportedly safe. The accident took place at 6.30 a.m. between Goti and Igathpuri stations in Central Railway with three AC coaches and eight Non-AC coaches derailing.
These students were part of a group selected to attend the national conference conducted by the National Disaster Management Authority in Kedarnath, Uttarkhand.
Irshad Goonadka, a first year student of Master of Social Work said that all of them were in a sleeper coach which did not derail and are safe.The 13 students and a college lecturer boarded the train that left Delhi on Thursday at 9.20 a.m. Around 6.30 a.m. on Friday, Mr. Irshad said, he heard a thud and he fell off his berth but escaped unhurt.
Much after rescue work began they were told to make their own arrangements for further journey. Irshad said they got into a bus and have reached Kasara Railway Station from where they had planned to catch a train to Thane. “We will then travel to Mangalore either by train or bus,” he said.
