Mangaluru, December 3, 2025: Deputy Commissioner Darshan H.V. said that issues related to laterite (red stone) and sand mining in Dakshina Kannada district have largely been resolved. A total of 59 permits have already been issued for laterite mining. Permits for sand extraction in 42 identified blocks will be issued by March, he added.
Speaking at a press conference, the DC said that sand extraction is currently underway in 19 blocks in the district, and an additional 42 sand blocks have been identified. With this, there will likely be no shortage of sand for the next five years, he noted.
Earlier, the price of laterite stone, which was available at ₹30–35, had risen to ₹65. This issue has now been addressed, and 59 permits have been issued so far for quarrying. Another 12 applications are pending and will be processed soon. The price of stone has come down to ₹45, and the aim is to reduce it further to below ₹40, he said.
Applications for laterite quarrying had been invited, but only 60 applications were received. The DC urged interested individuals to apply so that permits can be issued accordingly.
