Mangaluru, May 27, 2025: With heavy rains continuing to lash the coastal belt on Monday, as many as 41 houses were damaged in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts in 24 hours ending at 8.30 a.m. on Monday.
Of the houses damaged, two houses -- one in Moodbidri taluk and other in Ullal taluk in Dakshina Kannada, were fully damaged. The remaining 39 houses in the twin districts were partially damaged, according to the offices of Deputy Commissioners of the two districts.
Of 22 houses partially damaged in Dakshina Kannada, 14 houses were in Bantwal taluk, four houses in Mulki taluk, and two houses each were in Moodbidri and Ullal taluks.
Of 17 houses damaged in Udupi district, 10 were in Brahmavar taluk, two each in Byndoor and Kundapura taluks, and one each in Kaup, Udupi, and Karkala taluks.
Roads, power infrastructure damaged
Dakshina Kannada District Disaster Management Authority said 259 electric poles and four transformers of MESCOM were damaged during the period. In addition, its 12.950 k.m. long power supply lines were damaged.
It said nine bridges/culverts were damaged and about 80 k.m. long roads were damaged in the district.
Anganwadis closed
District administrations of two districts ordered for the closure of anganwadis in view of heavy rains on Monday.
Due to poor stormwater drainage system, rain water overflowed on the main roads in Mangaluru and Udupi.
Reports reaching here said that more than 20 houses flooded in Kukkundoor area in Karkala taluk of Udupi district due to artificial floods.
Ministers take stock of situation
Udupi district in charge Minister Laxmi Hebbalkar on Monday gave a direction to the district administration to take all precautionary measures to avert any untoward incidents due to rain. She said additional care should be taken in tourist places, for people residing close to rivers and the sea.
The Minister if need arises, residents facing the risk should be immediately shifted to safer areas. Care centres should be opened for the convenience of people and a 24-hour helpline should be made operational across seven taluks. She also urged citizens to remain alert and cooperate with the district administration.
Minister in charge of Dakshina Kannada Dinesh Gundu Rao who held a video conference with officials of the district administration instructed them to take all measures to help people during emergency situations.
He instructed Mangaluru City Corporation officials to clear all storm water drains of debris and ensure that water did not stagnate on the roads.
