Mangaluru/Udupi, Aug 4, 2025: 37 schools from Dakshina Kannada (DK) and Udupi districts have been selected under the PM Schools for Rising India (PM SHRI) scheme, a central government initiative to upgrade government schools with special funding. Across Karnataka, 665 schools have been chosen under this scheme.

Aligned with the National Education Policy, the central government will provide each selected school with funding between ₹10 and ₹15 lakh over the next five years to support various developmental activities. The selection process was carried out in six phases during the academic years 2023–24 and 2024–25.

PM SHRI scheme

Schools applied through the PM SHRI app by uploading data on infrastructure, academics, and administrative parameters. Of the 230 schools in Dakshina Kannada and 165 in Udupi that submitted data, only 23 from DK and 14 from Udupi were finally shortlisted. The submissions underwent multiple levels of scrutiny—district, state, and central—before final approval. Only schools scoring above 70 marks on the evaluation criteria were selected.

Under the scheme, the central government will also cover pre-primary teacher and support staff salaries, provide ₹500 per student annually for field visits, and allocate funds for eco-club activities (₹25,000 per school was granted last year). Over five years, these schools will receive special grants to promote holistic development.
