2019 scooter rider death case: Lorry driver gets one-year jail term, Rs 21,000 fine

Mangaluru, Jan 17, 2026: In connection with the death of a scooter rider, the JMFC 8th Court has sentenced lorry driver M D Satish to one year of simple imprisonment and imposed a fine of ₹21,000.

The incident took place on November 27, 2019, at around 11.50 am. Priya Y Suvarna (42) was riding her scooter from KPT towards Kottara Chowki when, near BMS Hotel at Kuntikana, the lorry driven by M D Satish allegedly rammed into the rear of her two-wheeler. Due to the impact, she was thrown onto the road along with the scooter and suffered severe head injuries. She was shifted to a private hospital for treatment but succumbed to her injuries later the same day.

Following the incident, the West Traffic Police registered a case. The then police inspector, Amanulla, conducted the investigation and filed the charge sheet before the court.

After examining the witnesses and hearing arguments from both sides, JMFC 8th Court Judge Fawaz P A convicted the accused and sentenced him to one year of simple imprisonment along with a fine of ₹21,000.

Assistant Public Prosecutors Geetha Rai and Aaron D’Souza, Vittla, represented the prosecution.
