Mangaluru, Mar 11, 2026: In view of the upcoming Kerala Assembly elections, security checks on trains have been intensified. During a major operation at Mangaluru Junction railway station, railway police seized 201 mobile phones worth around ₹10 lakh.
The seizure was made during an inspection of the Jamnagar–Tirunelveli Junction Express, which arrived at Mangaluru Junction at around 3 am on March 9. During the check, officials found three unclaimed bags placed on the luggage rack of a general coach. Upon inspection, the bags were found to contain hundreds of used mobile phones.
The inspection was carried out by RPF Head Constable Sujeesh and Constable Ramakrishna of the Palakkad Division of Southern Railway, who subsequently seized the phones. The checking drive was conducted as part of efforts to detect the illegal transportation of cash, gold and other valuables during the election period.
After examining CCTV footage from the railway station, officials noticed two individuals moving suspiciously around the area when the bags were discovered. Based on this, the Crime Intelligence Branch (CIB) and the Government Railway Police (GRP) have launched a search for the two suspects.
Investigations are underway to determine where the mobile phones were being transported, for what purpose, and who is behind the operation.
