A large number of devotees participated in the festival.

It was on the “Makara Sankranti” day that the exponent of “Dwaita” philosophy, Acharya Madhwa, installed the idol of Sri Krishna in Udupi, about 800 years ago.

The “Saptotsav” is held to commemorate this event. The “Three Chariot Festival” and the “Churnotsav” on Saturday mark the finale of “Saptotsav”.

The “utsava murtis” (idols) of Lord Krishna and Lord Mukhyaprana were brought to the “Madhwa Sarovara” on the premises of Sri Krishna Math/Temple in a golden palanquin at around 7 p.m. These idols were placed in a decorated boat. The boat went round the “mantapa” in the “Madhwa Sarovara”. This is called “Teppotsava”.

Then, the idol of Lord Krishna was placed on the “Brahmaratha”, idol of Lord Mukhyaprana and the “utsav murtis” of Lord Ananteshwara and Lord Chandramouleshwara were placed on other chariots in front of Sri Krishna Math/Temple.

Devotees pulled the three chariots.
