Belthangady, Oct 09, 2023: In a bid to highlight the felling of trees and damage to the environment caused by the National Highway widening project at Belthangady, a group of likeminded local citizens joined hands to organise the ‘Save Trees and Save Environment’ campaign on Sunday, October 8, 2023.
In the campaign, which took place in the early hours of the morning, the citizens of Ujire and Belthangady placed placards on the trees to create awareness about environmental damage. and to urge the authorities to take remedial measures, such as transplantation of healthy trees and plating of saplings, to substitute the trees being felled.
The campaign was led by advocate Vinod Mascarenhas, Sebastian, Roshan, Arun, and others. They began from Kalmanja Ujire to Belthangady, counting trees and placing a placard with an apt slogan on the trees, which are marked to be cut down to widen the road. They learned that 6,000 trees will be cut for the widening of the road. This will be a huge loss for the peaceful environment.
“We are not against widening the roads, but trees should not be cut down without transplantation or substitution. There’s an urgent need to save trees because our 33% of forest has been reduced to 24%. If you cut a tree, you kill a life; if you save a tree, you save a life, is the message of our campaign,” they said. They resolved to keep a close eye on the developments.
