Mulki: Youths assault farmer for refusing extortion demand; case registered

Mulki, January 2, 2026: An incident in which a group of youths allegedly demanded money from a farmer and assaulted him after he refused to pay was reported on Wednesday evening at Talipadi Angaragudde, under the jurisdiction of Mulki police station.

According to the complaint, the accused youths trespassed into the house of Shamsu Saheb of Mulki Kelaginamane with the intention of extorting money. They allegedly assaulted him with their hands, attempted to attack him with an iron rod, and issued death threats. A case has been registered at the Mulki police station against the accused, identified as Shyamsundar Shetty, Akshaya Poojary and Suveen, police said.

Shamsu Saheb had been rearing his cattle in a cowshed belonging to a neighbour, Jaggu Shetty. Among the cattle were Kambala buffaloes, some of which had won second prize at the Mulki Padupanamburu Arasu Kambala.

On Thursday at around 11 am, the accused reportedly arrived in a car, took photographs and videos of the cattle in the shed, and left. Later in the evening, while Sahabuddin and his father Sanjuddeen were oil-massaging the Kambala buffaloes, the accused Shyamsundar Shetty, Akshaya Poojary and Suveen allegedly arrived in a car, carrying an iron rod. They illegally entered the premises near the cowshed, abused them in filthy language, questioned them about the Kambala buffaloes and demanded ₹50,000.

When Sahabuddin questioned why he should pay them money, an argument ensued. It is alleged that Shyamsundar Shetty assaulted Sahabuddin on the head with his hand and abused him, while Akshaya Poojary punched him in the chest and reiterated the demand for money. When Sahabuddin began recording the incident on his mobile phone, Suveen allegedly threatened to kill him and attempted to strike his head with an iron rod, which Sahabuddin narrowly escaped.

When Shyamsundar Shetty allegedly tried to assault Shamsu Saheb, Sahabuddin pushed the accused to protect his father. On seeing local residents arrive at the spot, the accused reportedly fled.

Mulki police have registered a case under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including Sections 329, 126(2), 308(4), 115(2), 351(3) and 3(5), for criminal trespass, extortion, assault, attempt to cause grievous harm and issuing death threats, and are taking further action.
