Chennai, May 10, 2026: Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) president Chandrasekar Joseph Vijay sworn in as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on Sunday, ending days of uncertainty over government formation following the Assembly election results announced earlier this week.
Vijay, 51, took five days of negotiations and four meetings with Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar to secure the required majority mark of 118 seats in the 234-member Assembly.

TVK had emerged as the single largest party by winning 108 seats in the elections. Vijay on Saturday submitted letters of support from five Congress MLAs, two legislators from the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), two each from the Communist Party of India and the Communist Party of India (Marxist), besides two MLAs from the Indian Union Muslim League.
As Vijay was elected from two constituencies and is expected to vacate one seat, the alliance strength stands at 120 MLAs.
The swearing-in ceremony took place at 10 am at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium in Chennai.
With Vijay assuming office, Tamil Nadu witness its first non-DMK and non-AIADMK government in nearly six decades.
