US, Nov 4, 2026: The Democratic Party has made significant gains in the 2026 US midterm elections, reportedly capturing control of both chambers of Congress in a major setback for President Donald Trump and the Republican Party.
Democrats have registered victories in several key races, including Senate contests in traditionally Republican strongholds such as South Carolina, Kansas and Texas, according to initial projections. The results point to a strong voter preference for political change, with Democrats securing several early wins.
In Georgia, Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff won re-election, defeating Trump-backed Republican candidate and US Representative Mike Collins. Ossoff’s victory in one of the country’s most closely contested Senate races is a significant boost for Democrats, particularly as Georgia had been won by Trump by a margin of two percentage points in the 2024 presidential election.
Meanwhile, Indian-American candidate Pia Dandiya won election to the US House of Representatives from Florida’s 22nd Congressional District, defeating Marine veteran Casey Askar. Dandiya, a former high school principal, secured 51.9 per cent of the votes, while Askar received 49.1 per cent, according to results declared on Tuesday. Her victory makes her the latest Indian-American woman to enter the US Congress.
Democrat Suhas Subramanyam also secured re-election to the US House from Virginia’s 10th Congressional District. The 40-year-old, who previously served as an adviser to former President Barack Obama, polled over 61.5 per cent of the votes, defeating Republican challenger Dave Beckwith, who secured 36.4 per cent.
