Washington, Nov 4, 2026: US President Donald Trump congratulated Democrats on their victories in the midterm elections, acknowledging that the party had "done a good job" despite the setback for Republicans.

Trump said he was willing to work with the opposition, expressing confidence that the two sides could reach agreements on several issues.

"I know a lot of Democrats. I have total veto power, and I’m sure we’ll be able to work things out," he said.

However, the president also posted an image of a red MAGA-style baseball cap bearing the word "VETO" on his Truth Social account, signalling his willingness to block legislation if Democrats refused to cooperate.

"I think they’re gonna want to work with me. Otherwise, I’d just veto everything, and they’re not gonna want that," he said.

The Democratic victory gives the opposition greater power to block legislation, initiate investigations into the Trump administration and challenge the president’s judicial and senior government appointments.

Speaking to CBS News, Trump congratulated the Democrats, saying, "My message is congratulations to the Democrats, and I look forward to working with you for the good of our country."

He maintained that his absence from the ballot had contributed to the Republican defeat.

"I wasn’t on the ballot, and there was nothing that could be done about that. If I was, we would have won," he said.

The results have been attributed to voter dissatisfaction over the rising cost of living, tariffs and Trump’s war against Iran, which has pushed fuel prices higher and added to public discontent with his administration.

Democrats also made gains in key Senate contests in Texas, North Carolina, South Carolina and Ohio, states where Trump had actively campaigned and urged voters to treat the elections as a referendum on his leadership.

Speaking to Fox News, Trump said voters simply "didn’t like the candidates", while acknowledging that Democrats had campaigned hard.

"The Democrats did a good job. They fought hard. They’ve been fighting for a long time," he said, adding that he could work with them on "many things".

Earlier on Tuesday, Trump had blamed his absence from the ballot for the Republican losses in a Truth Social post.

"And if I was, we would have won IN A LANDSLIDE!" he wrote.

In an interview with The New York Times on Tuesday night, as election results continued to come in, Trump said he was prepared to accept the outcome.

"I am absolutely willing to accept those results," he said.
