US, Sep 3, 2026: US President Donald Trump appears to be considering another addition to his legacy, after suggesting that the strategically important and disputed Strait of Hormuz could be renamed the “Trump Strait”.
Trump floated the idea in a post on Truth Social on Wednesday, claiming that the crucial maritime passage was under US control. However, he later appeared to suggest that the proposal may not have been entirely serious.
“Now that we have it under U.S.A. control, should we change the name Hormuz Strait to TRUMP STRAIT???” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
The suggestion comes amid escalating tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global shipping route, particularly over control of the waterway.
Responding to Trump’s proposal, the White House later shared a map of the Gulf on social media with the waterway labelled “Trump Strait”.
“It’s got a nice ring to it,” the White House said in the post.

The proposal comes days after Trump signed an order renaming Lake Ontario as “Lake America” amid an ongoing trade dispute with neighbouring Canada. His earlier suggestion regarding the lake was also initially dismissed as a joke.
Meanwhile, tensions in the region have escalated further, with Iran targeting US bases in Jordan, the UAE, Kuwait, Bahrain and Iraq’s autonomous Kurdistan region after the US launched renewed strikes against Tehran on Tuesday.
