Vellore (TN), September 11, 2026: Three labourers were killed and 11 others injured after the roof of a church under construction collapsed in Tamil Nadu’s Vellore district on Thursday, officials said.
The injured workers were shifted by ambulance to Vellore Government Medical College Hospital, Christian Medical College Hospital and a hospital in Chittoor, neighbouring Andhra Pradesh, for treatment.

According to police, the roof slab of the under-construction Church of South India building at Mandi Krishnapuram near Katpadi collapsed while workers were engaged in pouring concrete for the roof.
The approximately 20-foot steel scaffolding and support structure reportedly gave way suddenly, trapping several workers beneath concrete debris and rubble.
Personnel from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) from Arakkonam joined the district administration, police and fire services in the rescue operation.
Vellore District Collector P.S. Leela Alex, who was supervising the rescue operation at the site, said the condition of at least eight of the injured workers was stable.
The district administration will constitute a committee to investigate the exact cause of the structural collapse and determine whether the builder had obtained all necessary approvals and building permits for the church construction, the Collector said.
