Bengaluru, Sep 23, 2025: Infosys Chairperson Sudha Murty was targeted by cyber fraudsters earlier this month — facing threats and abuse after she refused to share personal information. The scammer had posed as an employee of the Department of Telecommunications while claiming her mobile number was not linked to her Aadhaar card. The caller also threatened to disconnect her service within hours — claiming that obscene videos were being circulated from the phone number. The Rajya Sabha MP had registered a formal complain after growing suspicious of the caller.
A formal complaint has been registered at the Bengaluru Cyber Crime Police Station, and an investigation is currently underway to trace the individual behind the attempted fraud.
Threats to ‘stop’ her mobile service
According to the complaint, the fraudster falsely claimed that her mobile number had not been linked to her Aadhaar card. Using this as a pretext, the caller attempted to extract personal information from her. The situation escalated when the fraudster issued a veiled threat, alleging that obscene videos were being circulated from her phone number, and that the activity had been “temporarily stopped.”
Alarmed by the nature of the call, Sudha Murty checked the number on Truecaller, which misleadingly displayed the caller’s identity as associated with the Telecom Department. Sensing a possible scam, she refrained from sharing any information and promptly reported the incident to the authorities.
Surge in scam calls
