Manchester, July 27, 2025: Indian skipper Shubman Gill created history on Day 5 of the fourth Test against England at Old Trafford on Sunday, becoming the first-ever batter to score four centuries in his debut Test series as captain. With this feat, Gill surpassed legends like Virat Kohli, Don Bradman, and Greg Chappell, who had scored three centuries each in their respective debut series as Test captain.

Gill also set a new record for the most 100-plus scores by a captain in a Test series against England. Only Don Bradman and Sunil Gavaskar had previously scored four centuries in a single Test series as captain—Gill now joins that elite group.

Resuming the day at 174 for two and trailing by 137 runs, India reached 223 for four at lunch. Gill, who started the day unbeaten, reached his hundred before being dismissed by Jofra Archer just before the break. His 188-run third-wicket partnership with KL Rahul anchored India’s innings after early setbacks. Rahul, too, fell short of a century, scoring a gritty 90 before being dismissed by England captain Ben Stokes.

At lunch, Washington Sundar remained unbeaten on 23, while Ravindra Jadeja was yet to score. India trailed England by 88 runs.
