Schools shut in over 20 Tamil Nadu districts as IMD predicts heavy rainfall

Chennai, Nov 26, 2021: Schools will remain shut in over 20 districts of Tamil Nadu even as the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted heavy to very heavy rain in parts of the state on Friday.

The IMD said that thunderstorms with heavy to very heavy rain are likely to occur over isolated places in Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli and Thenkasi districts of Tamil Nadu on Friday.

"Thunderstorm with heavy rain is also likely to occur at isolated places [On Friday] in Thoothukudi, Cuddalore, Villupuram, Chengalpattu, Chennai, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, Theni, Madurai, Pudukkottai and Puducherry," the IMD said in its forecast on Thursday.

"Thunderstorm with moderate rain is likely to occur at most places over the rest of Tamil Nadu and Karaikal," the IMD said.

Amid heavy rainfall warnings, schools in over 20 Tamil Nadu districts were ordered to remain shut on Friday.

 


These districts include Sivaganagi, Theni, Madurai, Trichy, Thanjavur, Pudhukottai, Tiruvarur, Kallakurichi, Villupuram, Ramanathapuram, Nagapattinam, Mayiladudhurai, Cuddalore, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Dindigul, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, virudhunagar, Kaniyakumari, Thenkasi.

Meanwhile, heavy rainfall lashed Chennai late Thursday night, leading to waterlogging in low-lying areas.

Schools in Chennai will also remain shut on Friday in the wake of heavy rainfall.

Besides, the weather department has advised fishermen not to venture into the southwest Bay of Bengal, Gulf of Mannar and off the southern coast of Tamil Nadu , citing the possibility of wind speeds reaching 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph on November 24 and November 25.

It has also predicted isolated very heavy rainfall on the southern coast of Andhra Pradesh, including the Rayalaseema region and Yanam in East Godavari district on November 27 and November 28.
