SC quashes FIRs on NEET protesters, allows fresh cases against 2,873 persons

New Delhi, Sep 1, 2026: The Supreme Court on Tuesday quashed all FIRs registered against students who participated in NEET protests across the country, exercising its powers under Article 142 of the Constitution.

However, the court permitted the Delhi Police to register fresh FIRs against 2,873 individuals with serious criminal antecedents.

The apex court also directed the government to provide compensation to the families of students who died by suicide, with the compensation to be paid within three months.

Earlier on Tuesday, the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) withdrew its proposed protest march scheduled for September 5 after the Centre and four states urged the Supreme Court to quash FIRs filed against protesters in Delhi and other parts of the country in connection with the NEET paper leak agitation.

CJP spokesperson Saurav Das conveyed the decision before a three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant.

The CJP had announced a march from India Gate to the Delhi Police headquarters on September 5, demanding that the government fulfil assurances made on July 25.

During the July 20 NEET agitation, protesters attempting to march from Jantar Mantar towards Parliament faced police action. Security personnel reportedly used lathis and tear gas, while pellet guns were also deployed, leaving several protesters injured.
