Kharkiv, June 8, 2025: Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, witnessed a devastating series of Russian attacks on Saturday, leaving at least five dead and dozens injured. The strikes, which followed a large-scale aerial assault by Moscow the night before, have been described as the most intense since the start of the war.
Mayor Igor Terekhov reported "at least 40 explosions" in the early hours, as Kharkiv—located just 30 kilometers from the Russian border—was hit by missiles, drones, and guided aerial bombs. “This is outright terror against peaceful Kharkiv,” Terekhov stated, emphasizing the ferocity of the assault.
Emergency services released footage showing a massive fire engulfing a multi-story apartment block in the Osnovyanskyi district, where two people were killed. In the Kyivskyi district, a strike on a residential house claimed another life.
By Saturday evening, Russia resumed its offensive with glide bombs, targeting a children’s playground equipped with a miniature railway. Two more victims, including a 62-year-old man, succumbed to the attack, while at least 40 others sustained injuries. Among the injured, two remain in critical condition, according to Oleh Syniehubov, head of the Kharkiv regional military administration.
President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the attacks as “pure terrorism” in a statement on Telegram. Ukrainian officials suggest the recent Russian strikes may be in retaliation for a Ukrainian drone operation that inflicted significant damage on Russian cruise missile carriers.
As Kharkiv mourns its losses, the latest wave of violence underscores the escalating brutality of the ongoing conflict.
