Bengaluru, Apr 12, 2026: A major internal rift has surfaced within the Karnataka Congress, with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah under pressure to act against leaders accused of anti-party activities during the Davangere South bypoll.
Party sources indicate that political secretary Naseer Ahmed may be removed, while senior minister Zameer Ahmed Khan is facing scrutiny over alleged links to the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI).

The Congress high command is reportedly upset over claims that some state leaders backed and funded an SDPI candidate in the by-election, seen as serious indiscipline. Late-night discussions were held between Siddaramaiah and central leaders on Saturday regarding possible action.
Two reports — one by intelligence agencies and another by AICC secretary Abhishek Dutt — have flagged the alleged involvement of Naseer Ahmed, Zameer Ahmed Khan and MLC Jabbar. The reports reportedly cite instances of promoting alternative candidates and financial support to SDPI nominee Afsar Kodlipete.
Sources said the leadership is concerned that backing SDPI could pose a long-term political challenge to the Congress. The issue is also linked to internal differences over candidate selection, with some leaders pushing for minority candidate Sadiq Pailwan, leading to dissent within the party.
Efforts were made to defuse tensions through consultations involving leaders such as Rizwan Arshad and Saleem Ahmed.
With disciplinary action already initiated against MLC Jabbar and Naseer Ahmed’s removal likely, attention has now turned to Zameer Ahmed Khan. Sources indicated that the Chief Minister may consider dropping him from the Cabinet in a possible reshuffle as the party seeks to contain the fallout.
