According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake struck near the Mexican town of Puerto Madero at a shallow depth of 10 km (6 miles).

Following the quake, the US Tsunami Warning System warned that hazardous tsunami waves were possible along coastlines within 300 km (186 miles) of the epicentre.

In Guatemala City, the strong tremors shook buildings and prompted residents to rush out of their homes. Local media showed government employees evacuating office buildings as safety protocols were activated.

The earthquake was also felt across El Salvador, according to Reuters witnesses.

In Mexico’s southern state of Oaxaca, Governor Salomón Jara said the quake was felt with moderate intensity in the state capital, but no significant damage had been reported immediately after the incident.
