He didn’t have the money for the last rites and to get an ambulance for his wife.

For the last 15 days, Ravi and his wife Kalamma had been living in a hut near the forest department office in Yalandur town, collecting and selling plastic household items.

On Tuesday night, Kalamma allegedly got heavily drunk and died, said Ravi. Since he didn’t have money to perform the last rites and get an ambulance, he was carrying her in a gunny bag to the river.

Ravi packed the corpse in a gunny bag and carried it on his shoulders to the Suvarnavati river. Upon receiving the tip, police immediately stopped Ravi and took his statement.

After the autopsy, police performed the last rites in the presence of the husband as per Hindu tradition.
