PM playing victim card instead of apologising for brutality on protesting students: Congress

New Delhi, Aug 1, 2026: The Congress on Saturday criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accusing him of "playing the victim card" instead of apologising for the alleged police action against students protesting recent issues.

The opposition party also mocked the Prime Minister’s social media outreach, describing his "Instagram sabhas" as an act of "supreme self-obsession" that, it claimed, was failing to convince the public.

In a post on X, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh alleged that Prime Minister Modi frequently used harsh language against his predecessors and political opponents while portraying himself as a victim.

He also accused the Prime Minister of allowing abusive rhetoric by his supporters and shielding those responsible.

Ramesh said the country was awaiting an apology from the Prime Minister for the hardships faced by young people and for what he described as the "brutal actions" taken against student protests under the Union Home Ministry’s watch.

Referring to the Prime Minister’s recent remarks that he had forgiven children who allegedly abused him during a protest, Ramesh said the statement was an insult to the youth of the country.

He alleged that instead of seeking forgiveness from students who had suffered during his government’s tenure, the Prime Minister had chosen to project himself as the aggrieved party.
