Strait of Hormuz, Jul 14, 2026: An Indian crew member was killed after two UAE-flagged tankers were struck by Iranian cruise missiles in the Strait of Hormuz, the UAE Ministry of Defence said on Tuesday. The attack also injured eight crew members, including four who were seriously hurt.
In a statement posted on X, the ministry said the tankers Mombasa and Bahia were hit in the southern lane of the Strait of Hormuz in Omani territorial waters.
According to the ministry, six of the injured are Indian nationals, while the remaining two are Ukrainian nationals.
“The targeting resulted in the death of one crew member of the tanker (Mombasa), of Indian nationality, and the injury of 8 others, including 4 serious injuries (6 of Indian nationality, and 2 of Ukrainian nationality)," the statement said.
The ministry said the missile strikes triggered fires on both vessels, but added that the blazes were later brought under control.
The UAE strongly condemned the attack, calling it a “serious violation and a clear breach of international law, threatening the security and stability of the region."
It said the country “reserves its full right to respond to this escalation" and would take all necessary measures to protect its sovereignty, citizens, residents and national interests.
The ministry also said its armed forces remain on high alert and are fully prepared to deal with any threats.
The announcement came after Iran earlier said that its Revolutionary Guards had fired “warning shots" at two ships attempting to pass through the Strait of Hormuz.
Iranian state television reported that the vessels had been “targeted and stopped by warning shots fired by the navy of the Revolutionary Guards" after allegedly transiting the strategic waterway “illegally".
