One Dead, Several Feared Trapped as Six-Storey Building Collapses in Delhi

New Delhi, Sep 6, 2026: At least one person was killed and two others are in critical condition after a six-storey building collapsed at Satya Niketan in Delhi on Sunday afternoon. Several people are feared trapped under the debris.

Delhi Police said six people have been rescued and shifted to hospitals, while search and rescue operations are continuing.

The building, reportedly a 75-bed paying guest accommodation, collapsed around 1.30 p.m. Police said the 40–50-year-old structure had a basement and five upper floors and was being used as a PG facility. Repair work was reportedly underway in the basement when the collapse occurred.

Teams from the Delhi Police, NDRF, Delhi Fire Service and DDMA, along with fire tenders and CATS ambulances, were deployed for the rescue operation. At least 12 fire tenders and excavators have been pressed into service, with additional machinery being brought in to clear the debris.

Satya Niketan, located near Delhi University’s South Campus, has a large population of student residents. Eyewitnesses said several students may have been inside the building when it collapsed. Some locals also joined rescue efforts before heavy machinery arrived.

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said rescue operations were being conducted on a war footing and that the adjacent building had been evacuated as a precaution.

Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu directed all concerned agencies to coordinate closely and ensure swift rescue efforts.

Local BJP MLA Anil Sharma said some students were believed to be making calls from under the debris, raising fears that more people could still be trapped.

Meanwhile, AAP leader Saurabh Bharadwaj alleged that corruption and lapses in building safety inspections were responsible for the incident and demanded accountability.
