Older BS-III vehicles may need rubber parts replacement for E20 petrol: Centre

New Delhi, July 30, 2026: The Central government on Wednesday said that certain rubber components and gaskets in older BS-III vehicles introduced from April 1, 2005, and manufactured before 2016, may require replacement when using E20 petrol, which contains 20% ethanol.

In a written reply to the Rajya Sabha, Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari addressed concerns about the impact of E20 fuel on vehicle performance, fuel efficiency, engine durability, and maintenance costs. He was responding to a question raised by CPI MP A.A. Rahim.

Gadkari said a joint study conducted by the Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL), the Indian Institute of Petroleum (IIP), Dehradun, the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), and the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) assessed the effects of E20 fuel on two- and four-wheelers.

According to the study, no modifications are required for the engines of most cars and two-wheelers to use E20 petrol. It also found no issues related to drivability, starting performance, or compatibility with metal and plastic components.

However, the minister noted that tests on BS-III vehicles introduced from April 1, 2005, and manufactured before 2016 indicated that some rubber parts and gaskets may need replacement. He said these components can be easily replaced during routine vehicle servicing.

The government also dismissed concerns arising from anecdotal reports of vehicles misfiring or breaking down after using E20 fuel, stating that scientific studies found no significant changes in vehicle performance or abnormal wear and tear, even in older vehicles.
