More than 75 lakh people take part in global Surya Namaskar programme

New Delhi, Jan 14, 2022: More than 75 lakh people from across the globe performed Surya Namaskar on Friday as part of the ‘Surya Namaskar for Vitality’ programme organised by the Ministry of AYUSH under the Centre’s Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav initiative.

The programme was launched virtually by Union AYUSH minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Union Minister of State Munjapara Mahendrabhai.

In his address, Sarbananda Sonowal said, “Sun worship is done through Surya Namaskar to improve the physical and mental well-being of people. Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, yoga and Surya Namaskar are being promoted for the wellness and health of mankind.”

Munjapara Mahendrabhai added that research on Surya Namaskar reveals that it builds up immunity and keeps the body fit.

Several leading yoga masters and enthusiasts from across the world joined the programme and demonstrated Surya Namaskar. This includes yoga guru Baba Ramdev, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar and Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev.

Tamaki Hoshi, 2021 Miss World Japan, also joined the event virtually. She said the Indian government’s initiative would prove to be beneficial for all. She added that a large number of Japanese people have included yoga in their daily routine.

President of Italy Yoga Institute Dr Antoniette Rossi, President of American Yoga Academy Dr Indranil Basu Roy and members of the Singapore Yoga also joined in and performed Surya Namaskar while following Covid protocol.
