Man arrested at China border for smuggling iphones

New Delhi, January 13, 2015: A smuggler was arrested at China’s border when he tried to sneak 94 iPhones into China by strapping and concealing them around his torso and legs. However the act was foiled when custom officers noticed his ’weird walking posture’.

The smuugler, a Hongkong citizen, was seized at Futian Port, an immigration port of entry on the border between mainland China and Hong Kong.

Smuggling under Hong Kong law can warrant a seven-year prison sentence and a fine as high as $2 million. According to the report, so-called ’mobile armor’ is a fairly common tactic for phone smugglers.
All of Apple’s iPhones are actually made in China under contract before being shipped to countries around the world but purchasing one in the country can be a challenge.

In China electronics tend to be more expensive than those sold in neighboring regions like Hong Kong. Even after the products are made available in China, many people, smuggle in foreign-bought electronics to evade import taxes before reselling them for a profit.
