Kashmiri separatist leader Yasin Malik’s supporters clash with police in Srinagar

Srinagar, May 25, 2022: Clashes broke out between supporters of Kashmiri separatist leader Yasin Malik and Jammu and Kashmir Police in Maisuma area of Srinagar on Wednesday, May 25. The police fired tear gas shells to disperse the protesters.

A Delhi court has sentenced Kashmiri separatist Yasin Malik to life imprisonment in terror funding case. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) had sought death penalty for Malik.

Following the verdict, Internet services have been suspended in Maisuma and downtown areas of Srinagar.

Earlier this month, Yasin Malik had pleaded guilty of all charges, including those under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA), in the terror funding case. Malik reportedly told the court that he was not contesting the charges levelled against him, including section 16 (terrorist act) and section 17 (raising funds for terrorist acts).

Malik was also charged with Section 18 (conspiracy to commit terrorist act), and 20 (being member of terrorist gang or organisation) of the UAPA and sections 120-B (criminal conspiracy) and 124-A (sedition) of the Indian Penal Code.

On May 19, special judge Praveen Singh convicted him and directed the NIA authorities to assess his financial situation to determine the amount of fine to be imposed.
