Karnataka Minister B Nagendra resigns amid pressure over Valmiki corporation scam

Bengaluru, Aug 29, 2026: Planning and Statistics Minister B Nagendra has resigned from the Karnataka Cabinet amid sustained pressure and opposition protests over the alleged Valmiki tribal welfare corporation scam. He submitted his resignation letter to Chief Minister D K Shivakumar on Friday.

Addressing a joint press conference at Vidhana Soudha, an emotional Nagendra maintained that he was innocent and had been unfairly targeted by the opposition. Despite earlier stating that he would not resign, Nagendra said he had taken the decision voluntarily to prevent further embarrassment to the Congress party, the government and its leadership.

“Chief Minister D K Shivakumar has told me that I am innocent at all levels. But, on my own, and to ensure that the party is not embarrassed because of me, I am submitting my resignation letter to the chief minister,” Nagendra said.

Reports also indicate that Nagendra is likely to resign as MLA. His resignation from the ministerial post will have to be formally processed and forwarded to the Governor.

However, the Congress high command and the chief minister are reportedly yet to take a final decision on whether to accept his resignation. The party leadership is said to be weighing the political implications of the move.

Sources said Shivakumar is likely to hold detailed discussions with Nagendra and may seek to persuade him to reconsider. He is also expected to assure Nagendra of additional developmental grants for his constituency and reiterate the party and government’s support for him.
