Haveri/Dharwad, Apr 28, 2026: Karnataka Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao said the state government will soon operate the ‘108’ ambulance service on its own, making Karnataka the first state in the country to do so.
Speaking after inaugurating the taluk hospital in Shiggaon on Monday, the minister said work on setting up a control room and other facilities required for the ambulance service is currently in progress.
“No government in the entire country is providing ambulance services directly, and Karnataka will be the first state to do so. The government has taken this landmark decision to ensure quality service to the public during times of medical emergency,” he said.
Later, speaking to reporters in Dharwad, Rao said the government will also soon launch a teleradiology facility across the state.
He explained that X-ray and scan reports can be sent through a tele-system, allowing radiologists to examine them remotely and provide their expert opinions without requiring patients to travel.
The minister further said that recruitment to fill 1,300 hospital staff posts and 225 specialist doctor posts will begin shortly.
